Almost every buy points sale is a loss. You pay more per point than the point is worth, so it only makes sense to top off an award you already found. This one is not that. At the top tier you pay about 1.35 cents for a point generally valued at 1.5. You are buying below value, which means it works from a standing start. You do not need an Aeroplan balance, or any points at all, for this to be a good buy.
The tiers, and where the good price starts
Buy 5,000 to 25,000 and you get 50 percent. Buy 30,000 to 70,000 and you get 75 percent. The 100 percent bonus only starts at 80,000 points. At 50 percent you are paying about 1.8 cents a point, which is a bad deal. The bonus tiers are not close to each other in value.
What 80,000 points actually costs
Aeroplan charges about 2.7 US cents a point before the bonus. So 80,000 points is roughly 2,160 US dollars, and you receive 160,000. That is real money, and it is why this is not for everyone. If you are not already planning a specific business class trip, do not do this.
Why Aeroplan points are worth having
Aeroplan books the whole Star Alliance network, and unlike most programs it does not pass fuel surcharges on most partners. They also let you add a stopover on a one way award for a small number of points. It is one of the more flexible programs out there.
The cheaper way in
If you do happen to have Chase points, there is a 20 percent transfer bonus to Aeroplan through September 30, and 30 percent if you hold the Aeroplan card. Free is cheaper than 1.35 cents. But that is a shortcut for people who already have Chase points, not a reason to skip this sale if you do not.
Three seats you could actually book with these
Denver to Missoula, 15,000 points plus 46.70 Canadian in taxes, nonstop on United. Houston to Amsterdam, 40,000 points plus 79 Canadian, nonstop. San Francisco to Osaka, 50,000 points plus 89.20 Canadian, nonstop. All three are one person, one way, in economy. That Osaka one is the argument for this whole program. Fifty thousand points and under a hundred dollars to Japan.
