Amex to British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus Avios, 30 percent bonus

A European city landmark at golden hourAmerican Express to Avios

What is happening

Amex is running a 30 percent bonus to all three Avios programs, British Airways, Iberia and Aer Lingus. The transfer is one to one, so 1,000 Amex points become 1,300 Avios. It runs through September 27, which is a long runway compared to most of these.

The honest part

Avios are useful but British Airways adds real cash surcharges on some routes, especially out of London, so a cheap looking award can still cost you a few hundred dollars. Iberia and Aer Lingus are often the friendlier way to use the same miles. Look at the total, points plus cash, before you decide.

When it makes sense

1,000 Amex points become 1,300 Avios
Short hops in Europe are the sweet spot
Always check the cash surcharge first

The three programs share Avios but price flights differently, so the same trip can cost less through one than another. Bring me the route and we will look at all three together.

Deja's take
Good bonus, long window, just do not let the surcharges surprise you.
