Buy Hilton Honors points, reported at up to 100 percent bonus

What is happening

Hilton has reopened its buy points sale, reported at up to a 100 percent bonus, running through September 25. The minimum to get the bonus is 5,000 points, and there is a cap of 300,000 points a year before the bonus is added. That works out around half a cent per point.

The honest part

Half a cent is exactly what Hilton points are generally worth, so you are buying at fair value rather than a bargain. Hilton points are worth less than airline miles, so this pays off on an expensive night, not a cheap one. And it is targeted, so the bonus in your account may not be 100 percent.

When it makes sense

Reported at up to 100 percent, check your account
About half a cent each, which is fair value
Best for a pricey night you already chose

Hilton sells points often, so there is no need to panic buy. A long deadline is a good thing, use it.

Deja's take
Fair price, long window, and the right move only if you have a specific expensive stay in mind.
