The strong direction
Your Marriott status becomes JAL airline points every year, no flight needed. Platinum and up is the sweet spot, because that is enough to push you toward JAL Sapphire, which is oneworld Sapphire. That means lounge access, free checked bags, free seat selection, and priority boarding.
It also works in reverse
If you hold JAL status, you can earn Marriott hotel status too. That side tops out around Marriott Gold without extra stays, so it is a nice bonus but not as powerful.
How it helps in this economy
