This one is a discount, not a bonus

Worth saying plainly because they are not the same thing. A bonus gives you extra points on top. A discount means you pay less for the same points. Southwest is doing the second one, 50 percent off on 2,000 to 60,000 points.

Why the math does not work

Southwest is a revenue based program. Your points buy a fixed slice of the cash fare, so there is no sweet spot to hunt for. On their cheapest fare you get about 1.2 cents of value per point. This sale sells them to you at about 1.5. You are buying a dollar for a dollar twenty five.

The one exception

You are short for a specific flight you want, right now, and the cash fare is high. Then buying the gap can still beat paying cash. Check the actual fare against the actual points cost before you do it. Southwest makes that easy because the ratio is fixed.
