Where Virgin points punch above their weight
Virgin Atlantic has some genuinely great sweet spots on partner airlines, and their own transatlantic business class can be reasonable off peak. The award chart rewards people who know where to look, which is exactly the kind of thing worth asking about.
One structural note
The sale runs through Virgin Red, which covers cruises, hotels and lifestyle redemptions as well. Those points move one to one into Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, which is where the flight value is. Make sure you know which one you are buying into.
Three seats, and the third one is the whole lesson
Seattle to Honolulu, 22,000 points plus 5 dollars 60, nonstop on Delta. Boston to Amsterdam, 12,000 points plus 164 dollars 30. Boston to London Heathrow, 10,000 points plus 319 dollars. One person, one way. Look at that last one again. Ten thousand points to London sounds unreal until you see the 319 dollars sitting next to it. That is the Heathrow surcharge, and it is why I tell people to price the whole ticket, not the points.
