Summer in Ontario, without the guesswork

Ontario hidden gems: four spots most people, and most AI, never find

You don't need more vacation days. You need a better travel plan. These are four Ontario spots the locals sleep on, the kind I would actually put on your summer itinerary. Tick them off as you go.

Toronto

Elgin & Winter Garden Theatre

Two theatres stacked on top of each other, and the upstairs one has a ceiling made of 5,000 real preserved beech leaves. People walk past it on Yonge Street for years and never go in.

The catch: you only get in on a guided tour, on set dates, with no walk-ups. So the trick is knowing when the next one opens.

The Tip

Leamington

Point Pelee National Park

You can stand on the southernmost tip of mainland Canada, which sits farther south than northern California. Summer is beaches and the marsh boardwalk.

Then one week in September the trees fill with monarch butterflies waiting to cross the lake. You cannot drive to the Tip, so you ride the shuttle and walk the last stretch of sand.

Elora

Elora Gorge tubing

You float down the river on a tube between 22 metre limestone cliffs, about 90 minutes from Toronto. It is the most fun you will have in Ontario in July.

It also depends on the weather and the water level, and it books out. Nobody tells you that part until you are standing at the gate.

The Corran

Wiarton

Spirit Rock & The Corran

A burned-out 17 room stone mansion sitting on a cliff over Colpoy's Bay, and hardly anyone outside Bruce County knows it is there.

There is a long staircase down the escarpment that your legs will feel on the way back up. Wear good shoes, and go for summer or fall colour.

Questions I get about Ontario

Do I need a car for these Ontario hidden gems?

For three of them, yes. The Elgin and Winter Garden is downtown Toronto, steps from the subway. Point Pelee, Elora and Wiarton are road trips, and inside Point Pelee a shuttle takes you the last part to the Tip.

When can you see the monarchs at Point Pelee?

Usually the third week of September, when the trees fill with monarchs waiting to cross Lake Erie. It moves with the weather, so check the park's updates before you make the drive.

Can I just show up to go tubing at Elora Gorge?

No. There are no walk-ups, it books out in summer, and it depends on the water level. Book online early and check conditions before you leave.
