Is Switzerland really that expensive?

Switzerland on a real budget: what two of us actually spent, receipt by receipt

Grindelwald

You're not wrong. Switzerland is expensive. But is it the country, or is it one line on your bill? I kept every receipt from our trip, 19 to 24 August 2026, two of us. It came to $1,186 plus 30,000 miles, which is $593 each.

Most Switzerland budget guides tell you to buy a rail pass and sleep in a hostel. We did neither. We drove, and we slept at a friend's place, and that second part is the whole story. It's not the country. It's the hotel.

The receipt

Where the money actually went

Here's the honest part first, because it changes everything: we paid $0 for lodging. We stayed with a friend. So when you see our total, know that the hotel line is the one you will have to add, and it's the biggest one.

The biggest lines, two people

Flights Malaga to Zurich, SWISS business (ANA award, cash upgrade)$408 + 30,000 miles
Rental car, 5 days, 1,156 km, Hertz invoice$287
Gas for all 1,156 km$83
Pfingstegg cable car + toboggan + Fly Line, two people$148
Every meal and all the groceries$178
Abbey Library, St. Gallen, two tickets$45
Parking, the whole trip, three charges$28
The one train we took (Wengernalpbahn)$19
A restroom at Zurich train station$1.88

I braced myself for parking. Parking was $28. What I'd actually warn you about is the speed cameras. The limit changes constantly and the cameras are not subtle. One flashed me.

The car paid off

The move that saves you the most

If the hotel is what makes Switzerland expensive, sleep where it isn't. Base yourself in Germany or Austria and drive in, or book further out from the famous towns. Same mountains. Just know a rental car crossing a border can carry a fee; ours was 37 francs for the one day we drove into Germany.

Rhine Falls

Schaffhausen · Neuhausen

Rhine Falls in half a day

I showed up at one in the afternoon with every tour bus in the canton. Don't be me. Get there at nine.

What saved it was the Schloss Laufen castle side. Walk down to the lower platform, because that's where the spray actually reaches you, and stand at the rail. The view from the top is not the one you came for. Then ride the little glass lift back up instead of climbing, and walk into Neuhausen for lunch.

About four hours covers it, and you don't need a tour. If you're flying in or out of Zurich and you've got one spare morning, this is the one I'd give you. Just don't give it your afternoon.

St. Gallen

The day it rained all day

Friday it poured, and sun wasn't coming until evening. So I didn't fight it. I picked the one thing that was indoors and that you can only do in Switzerland: the Abbey Library in St. Gallen.

You slide felt slippers on over your shoes and walk into a room that looks painted from floor to ceiling. That parquet is slick, so if your balance is a concern, take the handrail seriously. It was $45 for the two of us.

Then, the second the forecast broke, we drove to Liechtenstein. The day wasn't lost. It was just in the wrong order: indoors while it pours, outdoors the moment it clears.

Two countries

Vaduz, Liechtenstein

Add a whole country in one evening

I still can't believe I never once thought of Liechtenstein as a real place to visit. We got to Vaduz at golden hour, and at dusk I walked the old covered wooden bridge over the Rhine and stepped out in Sevelen, Switzerland. No checkpoint. No guard. Both countries are in Schengen. Then I walked back and had dinner in Liechtenstein.

Park on the Vaduz side. The bridge is for feet and bikes only.

The passport stamp: it's a souvenir stamp at the Liechtenstein Center, Städtle 39 in Vaduz, and it costs 3 Swiss francs. It won't cause you any trouble at a border. It's the only stop on this list with opening hours, so it goes first, not last.

Grindelwald

The big mountain day, and the one charge that covered it

One $135 charge covered three things for two people: the Pfingstegg cable car up over the green meadows, the summer toboggan and the Fly Line zipline. Do the math with me: $135 split two ways is about $68 each, for all three. Best value of the whole trip.

The honest part: this day took thirteen hours door to door, and six of them were driving. The famous valley is worth it. I just spent it rushing. If I did it again, I'd sleep closer to it and give it a full day without a clock.

Pfingstegg
Appenzell

Appenzell

The small town I'd give you first

Appenzell took ninety minutes, a bakery and a river, and I left full. People live and work there, the painted houses line the main street, and a slice of cake from the bakery I still think about.

If it were your trip, I'd give you the small day first and the big mountain day after. You arrive rested for the one that asks the most of you.

What I'd tell you before you book

  • Your budget lives or dies on where you sleep. Price the hotel first, then everything else.
  • A car gave us places a train schedule wouldn't have, and parking was the cheap part.
  • Groceries beat restaurants. Our Migros and Italo Max runs came to $87 for the trip.
  • Check the hourly forecast, not the daily one. A rain day is usually just a badly ordered day.
  • Rhine Falls at nine, the Liechtenstein stamp before it closes, and the small town before the big mountain.

Questions I get about Switzerland

Is Switzerland really that expensive?

The hotel is. Our whole trip for two came to $1,186 plus 30,000 airline miles, but we paid $0 for lodging because we stayed with a friend. Price your hotel first, or base yourself in Germany or Austria and drive in.

Do you need a passport to walk the bridge from Liechtenstein to Switzerland?

There was no checkpoint on the old wooden bridge between Vaduz and Sevelen, because both countries are in Schengen. Carry your passport anyway, and if you want the souvenir stamp, get it at the Liechtenstein Center in Vaduz for 3 Swiss francs.

What is the best time to visit Rhine Falls?

Get there at nine. By one in the afternoon the tour buses arrive. Start on the Schloss Laufen castle side, walk down to the lower platform, ride the glass lift up and eat in Neuhausen. About four hours covers it.
